Denney Farms
"Growing organically in our backyard", puts it simply. We are a family farm growing on a 1/3 of an acre which is two city lots in the town of Silver Lake. We are going on 9 years of farming, having to have moved the farm location once. Our home in Silver Lake has been our main farm for 4 years now.
What used to be grass we had to mow, is now gardens that we can eat & share with our community. Because our soil is heavy clay with a high water table we are constantly working on building up our soil by adding truck loads of compost, fallen leaves from the town, wood chips from trees taken by summer storms & adding cover crops in the fall. We believe that if you have healthy soil, it will produce healthy foods.
On our farm we like to do things the ol' fashioned way, from our 1948 Chevy truck we take to farmers market and the 1968 Bolens tractor we use on the farm, to the seeds we save including several rare heirloom peppers & tomatoes. We try not to spray our plants. It's expensive & time consuming. We first use beneficial insects. If it comes down to loosing the crop or spraying we will spray only using suggested OMRI (organic sprays). With 3 high tunnels & a greenhouse we are able to offer fresh produce year round.
