About this Event
This event is for everyone! Come, see, and learn how local food is being produced at Purdue University - Fort Wayne. This walking tour will highlight the work of Glenn’s Natural Honey, The School of Education Urban Garden and The FRIENDS of the University Pantry at Purdue Fort Wayne. Visitors will learn how these three entities are growing, producing, and distributing local food to address food insecurity on campus and in the community.
This event will provide multiple learning opportunities. You will meet the beekeepers, observe live-in-action beehives, learn about local honey production and pollination, tour the School of Education Urban Garden, and talk to volunteers about the many ways the garden has been used for K-12 education teaching, as well as a source of local foods. There will be rock painting in the garden, and the University Pantry at Purdue Fort Wayne will have a human-powered blender bike for making smoothies with fresh produce and local honey. Come walk, learn, paint a rock, drink a smoothie and share a moment with us learning about PFW local food!
For more information email Julia Smith at smitj@pfw.edu or call (260) 481-6517.
Travel Tip: Both the Master Gardener Display Gardens of Allen County and the School of Education Urban Garden are located on the grounds of the Allen County Purdue Extension office on the Purdue University - Fort Wayne campus.
About Glenn’s Natural Honey
Glenn's Natural Honey provides locally produced raw honey from the northern half of Fort Wayne. Bees are raised naturally in small apiaries in a wide variety of environments from downtown Fort Wayne to suburbs to the rural countryside.
About The School of Education Urban Garden
The School of Education Urban Garden was founded in 2019 as a demonstration and teaching garden for students, faculty, and staff at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Since its beginning, the project has hosted elementary age children for gardening activities and tours, held a farm to fork dinner at student housing, provided fresh produce to the food pantry on campus, and been involved in a number of other community events and activities.
About The FRIENDS of the University Pantry at Purdue Fort Wayne
The FRIENDS of the University Pantry at Purdue Fort Wayne is stocked with a variety of packaged and canned foods and helps food-insecure members of both the university – including students, staff, and faculty – and the community.
