Heartland Communities is an economic development organization working in the local food economy, We sponsor Plowshares Food Hub, Rose Avenue Education Farm, and the Refugee Incubator Farm of Northeast Indiana. Project in development include a local currency stimulus program called Local Indiana Food Slips. We are seeking more members who want to move the needle toward a just local economy.
The mission of the Stewards of Heartland Communities is to build communities that are economically, culturally, and environmentally restorative, through community and economic development activities, including training and educational programs, worker collective entrepreneurship facilitation, cooperative systems, and community economics education.
Our Plowshares Local Food System Project is a community economic development project to organize farmers and farm workers and develop a local food aggregation, processing and distribution system for local consumption, while creating jobs and job training for new food workers.
At our Rose Avenue Education Farm, up to fifteen farmers begin a new farm business each year. Farmers are trained in organic growing methods and practice a variety of techniques to learn best practices.
